Prawning is the new fishing

Prawning is the new fishing

In the midst of the fast-paced and bustling life in Singapore, Jurong Hill Prawn Fishing is one place where people can rejuvenate with their family and friends.

Prawn fishing or “prawning”, which originated from Taiwan, is an activity where people fish for prawns. It is not a common activity people engage in but in recent years, more people are taking an interest in prawning.

Jason Ning, one of the owners, enjoys prawning as hobby which leads him to venture into this business. He mentioned that Jurong Hill Prawn Fishing was set up in the west to provide an alternative venue for people to fish.

Jurong Hill Prawn Fishing hosts corporate retreats and celebrations such as Chinese New Year and National Day. As it is located near most tertiary schools such as National Institute of Education and Nanyang Technological University, it is also convenient for students to organize gatherings.

Scene at the shoot

What captured our attention was the ambience of the place which was like a quick escape from the urban life. The place also exudes warmth as the patrons seemed to get along with one another.

We saw a group of family prawning together and they looked like they were enjoying themselves.

At the lounge area, there were people unwinding after a hard day’s work by chatting over beverages.

As for the prawning experience, we were amazed
at how big the fresh water prawns were.

We were also entertained by the host’s encounter with her catch. She burst out in laughter when she caught a prawn but did not dare to pull it in.

The main challenge was that some of the patrons were unwilling to conduct interviews and have their pictures taken. Luckily for us, one of the regulars, Ms Moon, was able to persuade them.

During the process, we were thankful that the skies were clear and did not experience any technical glitch.

We were also very grateful to Jason for being a cooperative and friendly interviewee.

Tips for prawning

During the interview, Jason demonstrated the strategies for prawning.

He introduced different types of baits to be used such as live worms and small portions of chicken’s heart. He mentioned that some patrons prefer to use live worms as they believe it increases the chances of baiting the prawns.

Before prawning, we have to measure the depth of the pond using a rod that has a lead attached to the hook. This is important as the bait will be at the eye level of the prawns.

There are two methods of prawning, one is to let the float which is attached to the fishing rod, remain above the water while the other, is to drag the rod slowly to lure the prawns.

It is important to look out for the float as it will sink when the prawn bites the bait. This is the time to strike the prawns.

He also commented that patience and practice are the essence of successfully striking the prawns.
